Looking for a quick and simple homemade substitute for boxed mac and cheese?
Simple ingredients are used to make this stovetop mac and cheese, which is ready in just 25 minutes. You should save this recipe for weeknights when you're busy. The best part is that it's so easy to create that after doing it a few times, you'll surely remember how to do it.
A fantastic homemade macaroni and cheese dish is something that most adults probably enjoy just as much as our children do.
There are literally countless versions of what is almost the ultimate comfort food! In fact, there are so many mac and cheese recipes available that I almost didn't post this one because most people already have a go-to method for making it.
Making homemade mac & cheese for the first time can be a little difficult. But don't worry, we'll explain everything and proceed gradually!
Ingredients:
➦8-ounce elbow macaroni
➦¼ cup butter
➦¼ cup all-purpose flour
➦½ teaspoon salt
➦ground black pepper to taste
➦2 cups milk
➦2 cups of Cheddar cheese (shredded)
Directions:
1. Bring to a boil a pot of lightly salted water.
2. Cook elbow macaroni in boiling water for 8 minutes, occasionally stirring, until tender but not mushy.
3. In a saucepan set over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the flour, salt, and pepper until smooth.
4. Add the milk gradually while stirring until it is smooth and bubbling. Don't let the milk burn.
5. The most essential step is finally added: cheese! Cheddar cheese should be slowly stirred in until melted and smooth. (We advise grating your cheese because pre-shredded cheese won't blend into the mixture as effectively as block cheese).
6. Drain the macaroni after it has been done cooking.
7. Toss the macaroni with the cheese sauce to coat it.
8. Transfer it to a serving dish/bowl and enjoy your mouthwatering Mac and cheese. (It gets much great when having it with a piece of the roasted chicken breast).
Note:
➦Convenience is the main focus of this stovetop mac and cheese, but you can bake it if you have some additional time and prefer bubbling baked mac and cheese.
To do this, sprinkle on any extra toppings you choose, such as Parmesan cheese, bread crumbs, crushed crackers, etc. Bake for about 15 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbling, at 350°F.
➦For three to four days, store leftover mac and cheese in the fridge in an airtight container. Add a splash of milk or cream, mix, and reheat in the microwave or on the stove, stirring occasionally.
